Anyone can justify their decisions, that's why we make them. I "only" get 36 ish MPG, but I also have superior handling, acceleration, grip etc to a car that will do 65 MPG. My previous car did 800 miles on a tank, could easily get 70 MPG, but I didn't enjoy the driving experience, I can't see the point owning a car unless you enjoy it.

Yes I've halved my economy, but Ive actually halved my miles per annum too, so I have a car with triple the power of my old one, and my fuel bill is pretty much the same...

Some people care. It may be just a dollar difference but to have 1 dollar and not to have one is 2 dollars (to paraphrase some great book). I'd rather spend them elsewhere. In addition, all these US specific gargantuan vehicles have compromised handling in addition to fuel economy. The unfortunate thing is that this excess tends to spill over - all the vehicle had to get bigger to withstand crash with new fleet average size, roads and parking spaces have to be larger, wear and tear on highways is greater (just to name and couple instances of collateral damage). I'd like to have some crx or civic with split tailgate but these are not coming back due to stupid new standards and marketeers that have found it's easier to sell them by lb (or rather ton).

Personally I wouldn't drive anything now that isn't 5 star Euro Ncap safety rated, just not worth the risk. You see new cars like the jeep wrangler and Ford Mustang failing the safety standards here, not for me thanks. Cars had to get bigger to become safer, but engine tech has improved ten times over since the 60's so we're not really loosing anything.

That's a neat picture. I'd like to see one with the smallest current MINI 2 door and from front, back and side views both side by side like that and also with the original in front of the current one on all three views. I may have to brush up on googling.

Cars definitely got bigger over time. Safety wise, I'm perfectly ok with buying any car made after 1998; what was mandatory then is perfectly acceptable for what I consider safe.
