Econoaid TB Booster

Saw the ad on our site. Looks like a combination throttle body spacer and tornado insert all in one? I know TB spacers are supposed to give the 'tornado effect' but this one takes it to a whole new level!

I used to be part of a truck forum and several people had throttle body spacers and noticed that they were actually causing a restriction in the line.

also, I don't think you will get the tornado affect unless your throttle is all the way open. when it is partially open, you should just get turbulence because of the teeth.

as far as the price, I paid over $100 for my throttle body spacer but that was long ago. so it may be worth testing if you have some extra cash. I wouldn't expect too much though

In past discussion on other forums, I think the consensus on these types of devices was that they can work somewhat on older engine designs, but most newer designs or even older designs with newer intake implementations, have enough inbuilt swirl or tumble such that these things make no difference.

Since they only make them for certain engines tends to suggest they have some effect on those motors, they might "bandwagon" their success by producing them for other motors where the effects are more marginal, so don't hold your breath if there's not a version for your motor.

In particular, motors that have a stratified charge lean burn mode might run worse with this type of device, as they are designed to "float" a layer of mixture over a pocket of air, and mixing it up may make them misfire or run badly.

I suspect that they make them only for certain engines entirely because each different engine has a different fit and requires more work...

Well, to be fair, i only saw spacers for single TB cars and my engine has a dual 48mm setup.

dkjones,

are you talking about your durango? there is a DIY trick that you can do to the intake that makes more power. in theory, it should yield you better MPG too.

the throttle body on your durango points upwards and the air comes from the side. there are small flaps that restrict the flow directly into the throttle body. several people have cut these off with a hacksaw and smoothed it out with sand paper to achieve better performance.

here is a guy that sells this just to give you a pictoral of what it would look like.

he also goes through the trouble to use thinner throttle plates and stainless shaft for the butterfly valve (also thinner).

I would definitely recomend taking it out of the vehicle before you did any of this. I used to be part of dodgetruckworld.com and guys on there did it all the time. it takes time but yields gains. and cost's nothing but some time.

I bet that's part of the major gains people get from the K&N and AirRaid intakes on these trucks.

If that works for increased performance I may just throw a K&N factory replacement filter in it, take off the cool air intake pipe(rather worthless really), and call it done.

I don't think I explained it very well. here is a thread about it from dodgetruckworld. the pics aren't great but it does give a better pictoral.

the first picture shows the throttle body with the two openings and there is a shield around the two openings like a figure 8. in the 7th picture, it shows where he cut off the shield except for mounting holes and such to obtain better power. I have seen this done better and polished better but at least it gets the point across a little better.

picture 8 shows the finished product installed without the shields on it from a side view so it is easier to see.
