50 years?!

50 years since the Golf arrived. Is it still the best?

I don't think it was ever the best.

Rabbit (Diesel pickup)

I DROVE AN 82 FOR 300,000 MILES. IT WAS VERY FUEL EFFICIENT. AT THE TIME I WAS A STATE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATOR. I CAN RECALL SEVERAL TIMES DURING THE COURSE OF THE INVESTIGATION BEING ASKED IF I'DLIKE TO SELL. I RECALL ONE MANAGER OF A CONSTRUCTION UNIT - AFTER NOTING THE CITATION I'D WRITTEN IN CONNECTION WITH THE INVESTIGATION (AND THE CIVIL PENALTY)

"YOU SHOULD LOWER YOUR PRICE" (BECAUSE OF THE FINE)

AFTER I RETIRED I SOLD IT TO A VW RESTORATION GUY (WHO SAID HE GOT 12 GRAND FOR IT (RESTORED)

Never had a Golf, too common for me, I like to go for the alternative. The french offerings have more character and a less clinical feel on the road. My GTi Vs a golf GTI, it's lighter, more powerful, has more torque, has a smaller engine so is more efficient, has more standard equipment and the upgrades are cheaper too. So far in, extremely reliable too, happy with my choice. The new facelift 8.5 Golf GTI doesn't even come with a manual gearbox, so the purists will be very angry...

I test-drove the diesel back in the 80's. The torque was amazing and it seemed very fast even if it truly wasn't. I didn't buy one but wouldn't mind to teleport back and have a do-over. I'd like to have the GTI now to drive on various of the sponsored runs they have. Or a Mini for the same reason. It would be fun to do some of them. In 1979 I drove my dad's 25th anniversary Corvette Indy pace car replica to what at the time was the world's largest Corvette gathering and parade. I forget how many cars but it covered roughly 3.5 miles of roadway in Maumee, Ohio, just outside Toledo.
