I agree w/ SVO...buy another VX/CX tranny. I bought one 2 months ago from a bone yard in NY for $100 + $50 shipping; found it on car-part.com, advertised w/ 60k miles, verified by a carfax report. I bought new axle oil seals and a shift lever boot cover. Swapped it into my '95 Civic DX w/ the help of my (former Honda mechanic) friend. It took us 4.25 hrs which included 10 minutes of measuring the pre and post tranny engine RPMS in 5th gear and another 20 minutes of re-tapping some threads on the CX tranny. All in all it was pretty easy, but were lucky my car was an original North Carolina car w/ only 74k miles on it...no rusted or corroded bolts.

I had a simaler quote of almost $2,000 for a tranny rebuild, that is almost as much as a brand new tranny from honda.
if you want to make sure that the main bearing on your new/used tranny is good, grab the splined shaft, and pull it, then push it, then wiggle it, it shouldn't wiggle, but it should have just a hair of end play, just a hair, it should also turn smoothly, if this is not the case then don't bring it home.

Thanks for everyones input...Sometime soon my friend and I are going to tear apart the tranny and replace the bearing hope its not brutally difficult since he has an air gun and if we fail then we'll go junkyard hunting =] thanks everyone once again
