95 Civic EG

Found a 1995 Honda Civic EG locally for sale and wonered what you guys thought of it for fuel efficiency. Anybody want to chime in? The owner says it gets anywhere from 35 to 45 mpg. Car has almost 200k miles on it. Should I look and listen or stay away? Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Actually it's a 1995 Civic CX, according to CarFax.

Re: 95 Civic EG

Good car for FE. Pretty fun to drive, even though it was the lowest powered civic from 92-up. Not much to go wrong with the car as the cx had no options at all. I had a 94 that always got 38mpg.

Reliable as the sunrise... and just as slow. I'd ask the borrower why he's selling.

Re: 95 Civic EG

Seller says he likes to take these cars, fix them up and flip them, which is what he's done with this one. At least he's being honest.

He says the only thing that's mechanically wrong is an idle that surges some. He said he has changed the iac valve and the eac valve. He believes it's either the tps sensor or a small vacuum leaks. Says this is common in these cars and that it does not affect its fuel efficiency.

Any thoughts? Stay away or take a good look at it anyway?

Re: 95 Civic EG

i had a cx and would try for another model if possible or try and swap a vtec-e in there. Mine had a bad oil leak and was very slow, i think their rated at like 70 hp or something around that

Re: 95 Civic EG

The CX was indeed 70 hp. I'd say that if the idle is surging, it is most likely affecting FE in some way. Any time you are coasting or sitting at idle, it will be wasting fuel.

Re: 95 Civic EG

Well I went and looked at the car. Totally disappointing. Was nothing like I expected. The surging idle was constant and was a serious problem. No way I'd give even near what he was asking for it. He seemed like a nice guy but this car was a bundle of problems. On to the next ...
