NEW Official Thread for posting daily FE updates

I couldn't get the original "Official Thread for posting daily FE updates" to accept a new reply and am wondering if that heavily used thread had reached the maximum limits of replies it could handle.

Springlike conditions (70F to 30F) let me get 83.2mpg for 724 miles from my latest tank. I did a coast-down test on one of the few fairly-flat, lightly-travelled, 65mph speed limit roads in my area. I took it up to 80mph, shut off the engine, and coasted down to 45mph. The speed dropoff was very linear, taking the same amount of time to drop from 80 to 75 as it did to drop from 50 to 45. So obviously the drag wall for my car is somewhere above 80mph.

Latest Tank

Wow, it is hard to follow 83.2 with anything, but here it goes.....

Last tank was almost 32 mpg, this despite a few things working against me. Right on average so I guess I did not loose too much, a year ago it would have been much less. Tune up parts will be ordered today, plus the weather is warming (almost 60 last night as a big storm rolled in from Hawaii) I should get better soon. Plus the wife is banished from the Peugeot during the FE competition , or at least limited.

basjoos:
Do you have a larger picture of your full aero treatment? I would love to have a look at your work. It is barely visible in the tiny picture in the signature.

Thanks

58.6 Mpg

Hello -

NEW personal best today on the way to work. Here's the info :

MPG : 58.6 (old best was 56.4, so a 3.90% increase)
Route : 10 West -> 710 South -> 105 West -> 405 South -> Exit Freeway
Miles : 27.8
MPH Avg: 48
MPH Max : 60
RPM Max : 2585
Gallons : 0.5
IAT Reading : Hot Air Intake led to Input Air Temp readings of 140 to 150 degrees F.

Net Elevation Change : ~210 feet drop

Weather : 86.5 degrees F, Sunny, 10.5% Humidity, 24.5 degrees F Dew Point
Time : ~11:00 AM to ~11:30 AM, ~30 minutes

Recent Car Changes : I have a mixed hot air intake. I partially covered up the normal "cold air intake" from a 2" diameter hole to a 1" diameter hole. This led to increased IAT temperatures at highway speed. I have fiddled with a partial grill block that doesn't cause the car to start to overheat. Hydrogen Booster NOT running because I am waiting for EFIE thingy to use in conjunction with the booster.

Hypothesis : Same as my last really good run. Hot dry summery weather and good traffic. I may have added about 0.5 MPG at the end with a very strategic and safe EOC. I know I have a good run good going when I hit "50+ MPG" at the 10 West -> 710 South transition. Normally I have to speed up at the end of the transition to "go with the flow". Today there was a van at the start of the 710 South driving slow with it's emergency lights on, so I followed it for a few miles in order to be able to maintain slow speeds. Traffic was just Goldilox today, not too fast, not too slow, never really stopped, just right!.

59.6 Mpg

EDIT : This result should be considered suspect because I used the IAT resistor mod (http://www.gassavers.org/showpost.ph...8&postcount=61)

Hello -

NEW personal best today on the way to work. Here's the info :

MPG : 59.6 (old best was 58.6, so a 1.71% increase)
Route : 10 West -> 710 South -> 105 West -> 405 South -> Exit Freeway
Miles : 27.8
MPH Avg: 48
MPH Max : 64
RPM Max : 2637
Gallons : 0.5
IAT Reading : NA - Using 220 Ohm resistor to simulate 200 degrees F IAT.

Net Elevation Change : ~210 feet drop

Weather : 76.5 degrees F, Sunny, 50.5% Humidity, 55.0 degrees F Dew Point
Time : ~11:00 AM to ~11:30 AM, ~30 minutes

Recent Car Changes : New tires and 220 Ohm resistor simulating 200 degrees F IAT.

Hypothesis : I think the tires are making the difference, but the % difference is too small to make a real conclusion. I don't think the IAT mod made any difference. The traffic was a little too pushy at the end, or I think I would have been able to hit 60 MPG. Oh well, something to shoot for next time .

I did my last fill for the FEC cycle today. 369 miles 5.5 gallons, 67 mpg. I now have 2000 miles at 60+ mpg. I have proven to myself that I can do that. Average speed runs about 34 mph with the stopping at lights and all. I am usually running 40-55 mph. I tend to run over the 40 mph limit and a little under the 55 mph limit on my usual route. The graph is really leveling off now. It is at a good enough level though.
Having multiple cars and a wife that won't ride without AC I have just been commuting with this car. If I use it for more general use the mileage will fall.

56.5 Mpg

Hello -

This is not as good as my personal best (58.6 MPG), but it shows that I am in the same ballpark for summer. I am no longer counting my "IAT resistor" MPG as a personal best because I failed to verify the accuracy of the scangauge under that circumstance. I want to record this MPG as a current baseline for installing the EFIE.

MPG : 56.5
Route : 10 West -> 710 South -> 105 West -> 405 South -> Exit Freeway
Miles : 27.8
MPH Avg: 49
MPH Max : 63
RPM Max : 2589
Gallons : 0.5
IAT Reading : Hot Air Intake led to Input Air Temp readings of around 130 degrees F.

Net Elevation Change : ~210 feet drop

Weather(.com) :
Temperature : 85 degrees F
Description : Sunny/Fair
Humidity : 38.5% Humidity,
Dew Point : 44.5 degrees F
Time : ~11:10 AM to ~11:40 AM, ~30 minutes

Recent Car Changes : None really. I am using FFT (until the bottle goes empty).

Hypothesis : Hot dry weather and good traffic. Except for one rubberneck section where some cops were on the side of the road, traffic was just Goldilox (not too fast, not too slow, just right). If it had been as dry as my previous run (10.5% humidity then versus 38.5% humidity today), then this might have been the same or better MPG. That run was on March 12, 2007, so maybe there was a Santa-Ana condition at that time. Can't remember.

49.9 Mpg

Hello -

This is not anywhere near an all-time best MPG, but it demonstrates the 5th gear in action :

MPG : 49.9
Route : 10 West -> 710 South -> 105 West -> 405 South -> Exit Freeway
Miles : 28.4
MPH Avg: 50
MPH Max : 64
RPM Max : 2250
Gallons : 0.6
IAT Reading : Hot Air Intake led to Input Air Temp readings of 120 degrees F or less.

Net Elevation Change : ~210 feet drop

Weather(.com) :
Temperature : 77 degrees F
Description : Clear/Fair
Humidity : 52.5% Humidity,
Dew Point : 57.5 degrees F
Time : ~11:30 PM to ~12:00 AM, ~30 minutes

Recent Car Changes : 5th gear swap.

Hypothesis : I never get as good MPG at night because the air is colder and more humid and I feel like I am being "pushed" by the faster night time traffic. However, compared to my other run, the MPH average is the same, so it really must be mostly the weather. The big thing to notice is the RPM drop compared to the last run. I think that if I can have a hot + dry + slower speed traffic day, I could get the most of the gear change. We'll see.

RPM Drop : 64 MPH max and 63 MPH max are almost the same. 2250 RPM divided by 2589 RPM is 0.869 => 87% => 13% drop in RPMs.

57.2 Mpg

Hello -

Not a personal best, but I like that the car performed well in colder conditions. Here's the info :

MPG : 57.2 (best is 58.6, so a 2.4% decrease)
Route : 10 West -> 710 South -> 105 West -> 405 South -> Exit Freeway
Miles : 27.7
MPH Avg: 49
MPH Max : 66
RPM Max : 2263
Gallons : 0.5
IAT Reading : Hot Air Intake led to Input Air Temp readings of around 120 degrees F.

Net Elevation Change : ~210 feet drop

Weather(.com) : 77.5 degrees F, Partly Cloudy, 49.5% Humidity, 54.5 degrees F Dew Point
Time : ~11:00 AM to ~11:30 AM, ~30 minutes
NOTE : The weather data is 2+ hours after the drive. Soooo, I think it was cooler when I did the actual drive.

Recent Car Changes : The 5th gear swap and tires raised from 45 to 50 PSI. The EFIE is online but it is most likely not being accounted for in the ScanGauge algorithm.

Hypothesis : The 5th gear swap and the traffic. Overall, I think that the 5th gear swap is a wash on the freeway because I use the pulse and glide driving technique. My taller 5th gear means I take more time to pulse up to my glide speed, so the end result, IMO, is the same. It was warm outside, but not like full summer. It's hard to explain, but I think that today, the traffic was good for my 5th gear swap. I really really really need to have a datalogger to make concrete conclusions.

58.5 Mpg

Hello -

This matches my personal best :

MPG : 58.5 (best is 58.6, so difference is negligible)
Route : 10 West -> 710 South -> 105 West -> 405 South -> Exit Freeway
Miles : 27.3
MPH Avg: 47
MPH Max : 63
RPM Max : 2177
Gallons : 0.5
IAT Reading : Hot Air Intake led to Input Air Temp readings of around 125+ degrees F.

Net Elevation Change : ~210 feet drop

Weather(.com) : 90.5 degrees F, Partly Cloudy, 11.5% Humidity, 29.5 degrees F Dew Point
Time : ~12:00 PM to ~12:30 PM, ~30 minutes

Recent Car Changes : The EFIE is online but it is most likely not being accounted for in the ScanGauge algorithm. I turn it off when I need to go above 25 TPS.

Hypothesis : I think this just goes to show that the car (and Scangauge) loves those those hot dry days. The weather conditions for the runs are near-identical. If I could have found a good slow-poke to follow, this could have been my best run.
