Jun 22 2015

Lots of city driving this week. Having The President in town certainly didn't help the traffic, either, with random street closures causing all sorts of fun. I did find a quicker way home, though.

May 10 2015

With all of the reconstruction going on on the 118/210 freeway, it's almost impossible to get home at a reasonable time. Traffic in Los Angeles? It must be a fallen angel they're talking about because it's pure hell most days.

Initial warranty passed. Defects in the car in the first 36k miles: One headrest cover replaced ( cut wrong ). One rear pinon seal. This is a known defect for the 2011-2014 V6 models - expect it to go out every 30-40K until the driveshaft is replaced with a one piece unit. The two piece has less vibration but much more play in it, which translates to more pressure on the pinon seal and u joints.

You know the only thing besides greed that would account for gas prices increasing by 25% in a month would be another World War. Aside from that, my car has its first repair due. It seems as if Ford's rear diff seals are only good for 30K miles (rear diff is leaking rather badly despite me using it for mostly commuting on the freeways ). Thankfully it's covered under their drivetrain warranty. I might get the gears swapped while I'm at it, since it's going to have to come all apart anyways.

Feb 24 2015

Heavy traffic this week. Getting stuck in Hollywood while 5 thousand idiots were looking for a parking space for the Oscars didn't help either. Premium fuel again. If anyone is reading this, use premium in your car as the extra MPG will equal the extra cost. Getting 25-30 more HP (the rated HP from the factory vs a huge loss on 87) is a fantastic bonus as well.

Back to the normal drive. The 210 freeway has been finally completed, so that's a welcome relief to my suspension. A lot of city driving looking for a car for my son hurt MPG.

Premium fuel as a test. They rate the engine at 305HP with premium fuel, so it's closer to 280 or so with 87. Not much of a difference, but enough that you can stay in 6th a bit longer on hills. The net is a bit over 5% more cost for a bit over 6% extra MPG. The break-point seems to be about $2.50 a gallon.
