Accent coasts poorly, but why?

I've tracked just about all my fuel consumption since new minus a few tanks (had then recorded in a phone and lost hte phone)
I average 29.5MPG!! that's hwy driving 90% going an average of 70MPH.
I want more savings!

Do you have a car computer (ScanGauge II is a popular choice)? That could help you fine tune your driving style, although 70 mph has a lot more air resistance than 55. Of course if you value your time more than a few gallons of gas that might be all well and good! I drive mostly on roads with a speed limit of 50, so keeping slow is easy.

Don't they advertise having the best warranty? I'd take it in before doing any mods.

If there is anything slowing your car down, let them fix it on their nickel. That way, it's sill under warranty.

It's not so bad that you could claim a mechanical failure, just worse than my other cars. If I didn't start out my trips with a greater than three mile coast I wouldn't notice so much.

The snow tires will have higher rolling resistance which could be a part of the problem with coasting and the cold weather will also effect coasting because of the fluids and grease being stiffer. I noticed a considerable decrease in coasting distance and down hill coasting speed during the winter in my '88 Escort.

Oh, yes, it's much better now in the spring and with the all-weather tires back on, but still not like the other cars I've driven on the same roads. Someone suggested putting in low viscosity gear oil but I want to do the coast down tests with it stock first. I'm waiting on my Kiwi MPG car computer so I can have a digital readout for the test, in case you're wondering what the holdup is. Its release was pushed back a few times to the 30th.

I think the Accent is a nothing compared to other cars. It's quite a pig on gas.
But! for the price (I paid 15000$ Cdn for a middle model series) You can't go wrong
I could have got a Yaris for 17500 (with the same options pw pl 5spd)
A honda fit for 18000? 19000? (what ever the price is)
Yet they all seem to get the around the same mileage (well a few mpg better than my car)

I put 2200km on my car a month. Why buy anything better than a cheap-o econo car and to pay more? bah, an avg of 30mpg is acceptable to me. I'm learning to deal with it really. I do not drive below the limit. I do feather foot my acceleration and try coasting here and there.

What do you do. Can't expect miracles I Thought I could.

i've been getting along great with my accent, minimum i seem to get is 30mpg city and i've nearly broken 40mpg highway its not such a pig once you start coasting a bit, and i still floor it every now and then. i don't drive slow or anything.

but yeah price is where the accent is great. i paid $4500 CAN for an '04 with 85,000kms on it. can't complain about that at all.

My Accent seems to be coasting slightly better than before. It's now at about 7,500 miles, so maybe it's broken in a bit more. Still worse than my other cars, though.

I swear my car is coasting yet better! I hit 70 mph coasting down my hill today and I've never done that before. My previous vehicles would coast so quickly on that stretch I'd have to brake, but it's still an improvement. Maybe the car is still breaking in? At 8,000 miles, so that seems like a kind of a long time.
