Getting Better

I filled up today with 7.8 gallons. The Odometer read 281.x which figures out to about 36mpg. I've reduce my speed on the highway from 55mph to 52mph on the cruise control. I can't really tell how much on an increase this is cause there was a bunch of city driving mixed in.

So far so good

just tried a little

just tried a little after-supper experiment: disconnected my alternator (de-belted it) and drove my city "test route". (alternators discussed in this thread: Does the Civic VX have a unique alternator?

got a personal best:

86.0 mpg US ... 2.74 L/100 km ... 103.3 mpg (Imp) woohoo!

(previous best: 82.9 mpg US ... 2.84 L/100 km ... 99.6 mpg (imp) for details, see back in this thread on apr. 20 )

- lukewarm start: 30 min EBH
- 20 mph avg
- 40 mph max
- 7.3 mi. round trip
- made 3 of 6 traffic lights

Conditions at Grenadier Island (nearby) @ 8 pm:

Wind Direction (WDIR): SW
Wind Speed (WSPD): 7 km/h
Atmospheric Pressure (PRES): 100.8 kPa
Air Temperature (ATMP): 13 C / 55 F

how cool is that. beat 100 mpg imperial, and it's only 2 mpg (US) away from doubling my EPA city rating.

also related: i may have discovered the reason for my scangauge miscalculating fuel usage by up to 4% on my previous couple of tanks. my brother in law borrowed it and set his engine size in memory (3.0L ... toyota v6). i hadn't set it back to 1.0L until just before tonight's loop.

nice results Metro. I have

nice results Metro.

I have some results too but I don't have a scanguage. I'm at 198 miles and I'm about to hit the half way mark in 10-15 miles. At 185 at the halfway mark is a 28mpg tank. The weird thing is I'm been driving street 60-65% of this tank. On my way to vegas I hit halfway mark at 230 miles and that was a high 30's tank.

Things that I have done this tank is pump up my tires to 55psi and I replaced the engine temperature sensor. My driving strategy is let the car shift itself, before I tried to force the tranny to shift at 1500 but it's very hard to do so. If I let the tranny shift by itself it does it at 1600rpm and I have a lot better accelaration. So hopefully this tank will be a 29mpg or maybe a small chance of a 30mpg tank. It may not seen much but going from a 24mpg tanks to 29mpg tanks is huge. That is saving 3 gallons every time I fill up. Right now with current gas prices I'm saving $11+ per tank, not to mention my cash back credit card so that's $12 a tank of savings. That's $312 a year.

34.2 on the last tank @ 333

34.2 on the last tank @ 333 miles

50/50 highway-city

nothing amazing but I have been getting around 35mpg on the last few tanks. This is better then the 30mpg average i used to get.

hit the halfway mark at 210

hit the halfway mark at 210 miles. Interesting note is my 4th started 1.5 miles earlier. So changing to a new engine coolant temp. sensor helped. Also it idles at lower rpm in D.

your gaslog cumulative MPG has a nice trend to it though. that's the main thing i look for.

and i noticed your sig comment about saving gas vs. getting good mpg. i'm probably guilty of that - sometimes driving more to lower my average.

compaq: glad to hear your tranny is shifting earlier for you.

Thanks metro. The best part

Thanks metro. The best part was on the streets it goes into 4th 1 mile sooner. The freeway is still 1.5 miles sooner. The streets is where my mpg is the worst. On the freeway I'm getting 40mpg for sure.

My transmission actually

My transmission actually goes into full lock-up sooner when it's cold, that kinda pisses me off but I've gotten over it. 200 miles to the half tank, looking good, 40+ mehbe?

Yeah metro i am guilty a bit too. I put that up as a reminder to me and everyone else that total gallons used is more important then total mpg.

my transmission only goes full lock up when the thermostat opens. The old sensor just dumped too much fuel. New engines dump more fuel to cool themselves off. When you dump less fuel the engine runs leaner and hotter. I hope this tank is a 29mpg tank because I've been driving on the street 2/3 of this tank. If I drove the same amount of freeway and street then most likely the tank will be 30mpg. All I have been doing to the car is gradually increasing the tire pressure and replacing broken components, that's it. I'm sure if I were to replace the PCV I would get another 1/2 mpg. I'm sure If I were to replace the PCV, 2 02 sensors, and go back to my oem tires I could get 31-32mpg tanks constant. Yea, Nissan sucks.
